There was a time when Tusu Parab or Makar Parab was celebrated with vibrant festivities in Purulia district, surpassing even the grandeur of Durga Puja. Many considered Tusu Parab as the cultural essence of Purulia, and various Tusu fairs took place in different locations during the first two weeks of the (Magh mas) January month. Notable locations included Jhalda's Tulin, Deulghata near Joydevpur-Arsha border, Telidi Ghat in Purulia town's outskirts, Mahadebberia in Purulia 2 Block, Jamuna Setu in Bandoan, and Shilai in Pancha Thana, among others. Apart from Chhau dance, another attraction of these fairs was the cockfight. However, the concern is that gradually, the Jungle Mahal's Post Harvest Festival is losing popularity. In today's times, the Tusu fairs in various parts of the district, such as Tusu gan, are not as well-known, and the visuals of women participating in Chhau Biday (immersion) don't receive the attention they deserve. The rich cultural heritage of Purulia and Jungle Mahal is fading away. If you have opinions on how Tusu Melas are currently celebrated in your area and how the cultural heritage can be revitalized, feel free to share this post in social media and don't allow this festivals to be lost in time.
